In addition to being National Nutrition Month, March is also National Kidney Month. If you’ve been following me, you know I have my own wellness coaching practice centered around non-diet, lifestyle based programming – Lifelong Nutrition and Fitness. My goal is to assist women take control of their lives and health by adopting new sustainable healthy eating (i.e. no diets) and exercise habits.
What you may not know is that the various settings I have worked in the past 11 years (hospitals, nursing homes, hospice centers) have only reinforced my desire to keep people healthy, independent and doing what they dream of doing – travelling, spending time with their family, etc – by (re)starting my own business.
For the past five years I have been working in dialysis units with people who have end stage kidney disease. Did you know 1 in 10 Americans have kidney disease? That’s more than 26 million and most don’t even know it because there are often no symptoms until the disease has progressed. One in three Americans is at risk for kidney disease due to lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure or having a family history of kidney disease. Early detection and treatment can make a difference in preventing kidney disease. so it’s important to know if you’re at risk. Take this short quiz to know your risk.
How can you reduce your risk? As I said, lifestyle related diseases place you at risk therefore I strongly believe lifestyle change should be the first step in preventing as well as treating kidney disease and preventing it from worsening. If you are ready to toss diets and to make you and your health a priority I would LOVE to work with you. The hardest part of starting something new is getting started. I’m here to help you get started as well as to support you as you take simple steps to healthy, one day at a time. Call me at 805-743-4078 so we can get to know each other a little better – what your history is, what your goals are and how I can help you on your journey to healthy.
In the meantime, here is a chart to help you get to know more about your kidneys.
